 Phillies Lose Werth To DL

The Phillies were hoping Jayson Werth would recover from his injury but he's headed to the disabled list instead.  Werth left Thursday's game with a strained right oblique muscle.  Earlier this month, Werth slammed three homers in one game against the Blue Jays and was hitting .260 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs in 40 games.

To replace Werth, outfielder T.J. Bohn was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.  Bohn's IronPig numbers were unspectacular - .162 with two home runs in 32 games.

In addition to Bohn, the Phillies have also used Greg Dobbs, So Taguchi  and Eric Bruntlett in the outfield this season and Pat Burrell, Shane Victorino and Geoff Jenkins are listed as the starters on the depth chart.

Indians, Rockies and Marlins Send Players To DL

Cleveland's Fausto Carmona left Friday night's game with a hip injury and was placed on the DL today with a left hip strain.  Carmona struggled Friday giving up 6 runs in 2 innings against Texas but was going strong until the hip injury forced him to the sidelines.  Carmona was 4-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 10 starts.  The Indians also optioned pitcher Jensen Lewis to Triple-A Buffalo who been 0-2 with a 3.58 ERA in 20 appearances.

To replace Carmona and Lewis, Cleveland recalled pitcher Scott Elarton and Edward Mujica.  The 33-year-old Elarton made 15 appearances in Buffalo going 1-2 with a 2.45 ERA.  He last pitched in the majors with the Royals last season and is 56-60 with a 5.31 ERA mostly as a starter but has been used mostly as a reliever in the minors.  Mujica, 24, bounced back and forth between the minors and majors over the past two years for Cleveland and is 0-1 with a 5.17 ERA in 20 career appearances.  There was no announcement of who would take Carmona's spot in the rotation.

Colorado lost two to the DL on Saturday when shortstop Clint Barmes and outfielder Brad Hawpe hit the disabled list.  Barmes strained his right knee when Jose Reyes slid into him in the 10th inning of the Rockies-Mets extra inning game on Friday.  Hawpe was hurt on Wednesday and his hamstring had not improved.

To fill their spots on the roster, the Rockies recalled infielder Ian Stewart and outfielder Seth Smith from Triple-A Colorado Springs.  Smith was expected to start in right field against the Mets.  The 25-year-old Smith went 4-for-7 last year for the Rockies and was hitting .321 with 11 steals in 45 games for Colorado Springs.  Stewart had hit 12 homers with a .281 average for their Triple-A squad.

Florida Marlins outfield Brett Carroll fought the wall and the wall won on Friday night.  Carroll crashed into the outfield wall on Friday night trying to track down an Aaron Rowand homer.  After the game, Carroll appeared in a sling and today was placed on the disabled list with a Level 2 shoulder separation.  It was Carroll's third start this season with the Fish and he was 1-for-16 in 15 games.

Robert Andino who was sent down to make room for Jacque Jones was recalled just a day later.  The 24-year-old Andino was hitting just .182 when he was sent down to Triple-A Albuquerque.

At the team blog, Inside the Dodgers, Vice President of Broadcasting and Public Relations Josh Rawitch gives us some details and his thoughts on the move…

Public Enemy #1…That's what Vin Scully called Clayton Kershaw's curveball back in Spring Training and it'll be on display tomorrow at Dodger Stadium in his big league debut. To make room for him, Esteban Loaiza was designated for assignment and Yhency Brazoban was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas…Here's hoping tomorrow's the start of a very special career and tonight is the start of a nice winning streak. More for the park in a bit…

Back in December, in my interview with Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti, we discussed Kershaw as well…

Speaking of Kershaw, I asked if he would have a chance to make the big league club this spring given his age, or if they would let his work dictate where he winds up.

Absolutely (he’ll get a chance). You see what some young pitchers have done over the past few years, and just because someone is young, it doesn’t mean he can’t handle himself (at the major league level).

And finally, last July, I had the opportunity to speak personally with the lefty phenom. Here's a little clip of an exchange we had…

JH: The Dodgers seem to be content moving you along slowly…as they do with many of their young pitchers. Does that bother you or frustrate you at all?

CK: Ah (pause)…They know what they’re doing better than I do. I can’t argue with them or complain to them. All I can do is pitch. You know…pretty much what it comes down to is that if I don’t give up a lot of runs, I kind of have to force them to move me up if you know what I mean.

And force their hand he has…Good luck Clayton. We're looking forward to watching you!

Short Hops: The King, Smoltz Rehabs..

Seattle pitcher Felix Hernandez has been scratched from his start today due to leg soreness. Carlos Silva will pitch today against the Yankees. They will also move Jarrod Washburn up a day to pitch tomorrow. According to the team Hernandez will pitch again on Monday.

“It's still sore, and we don't want to press him,” Mariners manager
John McLaren said before Friday night's series opener at Yankee
Stadium. “We want to make sure we get this thing right. We didn't want
to put him in a situation where it might lead to another injury of his
shoulder or something.”

…Atlanta Braves ace John Smoltz will test his cranky shoulder with a rehab assignment for their Double-A Mississippi club. When he returns to the Braves he'll most likely head to the bullpen and take over the closers role.

…Doug Davis of the Arizona Diamondbacks made his first start last night since returning from thyroid cancer surgery. He went 7 innings only giving up one run, as the Snakes thumped the Atlanta Braves 11-1.

…From the world of Independent baseball: The Calgary Vipers of the Golden Baseball League traded their newly signed pitcher (who couldn't get into Canada) to the Laredo Broncos of the United league for, get this…10 Prairie Sticks maple bats.

“They just wanted some bats, good bats — maple bats,” Broncos General Manager Jose Melendez said Friday.

If memory serves, when the Braves got Kerry Lightenberg - he was traded from his independent team for a couple bats and a bucket of baseballs.

New York Mets General Manager Omar Minaya gives Willie Randolph the kiss of death, by voicing his support of the Mets Manager. Minaya and Randolph are to meet either Monday or Tuesday after the team returns home from it's current road trip.
