…The last time Carl Pavano toed the rubber for the New York Yankees it was April of last year. Last night was just his 20th start since signing a $40 million dollar contract in 2005, and as fate would have it - Pavano would get credit for the win.
Quoth Pavano:
“It’s amazing. This is what I get paid to do, this is what I live for,” Pavano said. “This is all I really want, to go out there every fifth day and do my job.”
According to manager Joe Girardi Pavano will remain in the rotation.
…Speaking of the New York Yankees, Joba Chamberlain threw 35 pitches off the mound Saturday and could be back before the end of the season. He’s been on the disabled list since August 6th with a sore shoulder.
“Everything felt good, felt pretty neat,” he said. “I cut a couple loose. Nothing tightened up after I let one go.”
Pretty neat? Did he just say ‘neat’?
…The Texas Rangers Hank Blalock made his first start in the Major Leagues at 1st base last night. The Cleveland Indians tried to test him early, when Grady Sizemore laid down a bunt that Blalock was able to catch for the out. He’s committed to play first base for the rest of the season as Chris Davis mans the hot corner.
…Doug Mientkiewicz of the Pittsburgh Pirates returned to the team after being put on the bereavement list to be by his wifes side as she had a pace maker installed. He wanted to stay longer, but according to him his wife Jodi kicked him out of the house.
“She kicked me out of the house,” said Mientkiewicz, with a wry smile. “That’s why I’m here. She called Greg (Johnson, traveling secretary) and set up my plane ticket.
“After all the surgeries I’ve had, and she’s been right there by my side, I feel weird not being with her now. She’s still in a lot of pain, but she’s a warrior.”
…Seattle Mariners right fielder Ichiro is in the middle of a 15 game hitting streak and is looking to close in on 200 hits. Right now he has 170 hits, just 30 shy. He’s trying to become only the second player in major league history to have 200 hits in eight consecutive seasons not to mention becoming just the third player in the American League to lead his league in hits for three straight season.
