Short Hops: Radial Bats? Jose Guillen at it again…

…Ward Dill a New Jersey inventor and head of the Radial Bat Company, may have the right solution for Major League Baseballs broken bat problem. It’s called the Radial Bat,and it’s made of 12 solid wedges of wood held together by a powerful adhesive and then clamped under 36 pounds of pressure. The end result is a bat that wont splinter and break like it’s ash and maple brethren, this according to Dill.

“It’s impossible for the barrel to separate from the handle,” says Dill, who founded the Radial Bat Company in 2007, a year after making his first one. “Even under the most severe conditions, the worst that will happen with one of the Radial Bats is one of the wedges will crack. No danger will be presented to any of the players, umpires, coaches or spectators in the stadium.”

Major League Baseball’s safety committee is looking into the bat.

…Maybe it’s time for Jose Guillen to get some anger management. Guillen went after a heckling fan on Tuesday night - having to be restrained by catcher Miguel Olivo and Third Base coach Luis Silvero.

Quoth GM Dayton Moore.

“It’s an unfortunate situation. It really is,” Moore said Wednesday. “Jose has got to remain focused to what happens on the baseball field. It is certainly inappropriate to engage in any conversation with the fans during a game. You need to ignore it and respond in a way that doesn’t draw attention to yourself. We’ll just continue to work with Jose about managing what he says and how he responds. It is something we continue to manage.”

Honestly, when is this guy going to learn? This was his fourth outburst this year alone!

Mark Bowman of MLB.com is reporting the Atlanta Braves have gone out and signed pitcher Elmer Dessens to a contract for the remainder of the 2008 season. He was released by the Pirates in March and has been pitching in the Mexican League since.

The New York Post is reporting that the New York Yankee’s have placed pitcher Carl Pavano on waivers within the last 24 hours. The report goes on to say that if he clears the Mets might be a good fit for Pavano. Also, infielder Cody Ransom was put on waivers too.

…New York Mets Shortstop Jose Reyes, wants to become a US Citizen. This according to a report by Adam Rubin in the New York Daily News. Reyes says he close to getting a green card and resident status, but has to wait another five years for citizenship. He will maintain a place in the Dominican Republic, to get ready for spring training as the weather is much nicer during the time he needs to get ready for spring training.

According to Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal, Brian Fuentes of the Colorado Rockies isn’t likely to be traded in time for the cut off Sept. 1st for play off rosters. He was placed on waivers Monday, but on Tuesday put on the bereavement list which canceled his placement on waivers. Just like the Disabled List, those put on the bereavement list cannot go through the waiver process

News & Notes: Wednesday’s Activations, Disabled List Additions, Options and Releases

The big moves of the day were Mark Kotsay traded from the Atlanta Braves to the Boston Red Sox and the pending mess that is the Pedro Alvarez contract.  But there were more:

  • Kotsay to the Red Sox was not the only move of the day for the Braves.  They added outfielder Josh Anderson to the 25-man roster to fill Kotsay’s roster spot and signed veteran pitcher Elmer Dessens.  Dessens, 37, is expected to be added to the 25-man roster later this week.
  • In Baltimore, the Orioles activated pitcher Greg Aquino from the 15-day disabled list and followed the activation by designating him for assignment.
  • The Detroit Tigers recalled infielder Jeff Larish from Triple-A Toledo and optioned pitcher Chris Lambert to Toledo.  Lambert was pounded for six runs (two earned), five hits, a walk and a hitbatsmen in 2-2/3 innings in his only start.  He also took the loss.
  • Outfielder Reggie Willits was activated from the 15-day disabled list and pitcher Jason Bulger was sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake to clear the way for his return.  They also lost their hold on the best record in the American League with their loss and the Tampa Bay Rays win.
  • Blake DeWitt was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas back to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ roster.  To make room for DeWitt, the club designated Pablo Ozuna for assignment.  Ozuna was 3-for-18 (.167) in 28 games with Los Angeles.
  • Before retaking first place in the N.L. East, the New York Mets placed catcher Ramon Castro on the 15-day disabled list with a strained quad.  The Mets recalled catcher Robinson Cancel from Triple-A New Orleans to fill his roster spot.  The club also recalled pitcher Nelson Figueroa from New Orleans and optioned infielder Argenis Reyes to Triple-A to clear a roster spot for Figueroa.
  • The team the Mets knocked off, the Philadelphia Phillies, dipped into their Double-A Reading roster to call up pitcher Andrew Carpenter.  The Phillies designated Andy Tracy for assignment.
  • Despite the Alvarez mess, the Pittsburgh Pirates still had business to attend to.  The Bucs called on pitcher Jesse Chavez from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioned pitcher Craig Hansen to Indy.  Pitcher Phil Dumatrait was moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list to open a spot on the 40-man roster.
  • The San Diego Padres activated pitcher Bryan Corey from the 15-day disabled list and optioned Corey and pitcher Josh Banks to Triple-A Portland.
  • Infielder Josh Phelps was called up from Triple-A Memphis to add a position player and sent pitcher Jaime Garcia to Memphis to clear a roster spot for Phelps.
