Out from Under the Hampton
The Colorado Rockies have reason to celebrate: Mike Hampton’s contract is finally about to end. No, he hasn’t pitched for the Rockies since 2002, but that’s what happens when you sign a guy to an eight-year deal.
People are focusing on the 21-28 record and 5.75 ERA he compiled in the two years that he actually pitched for Colorado, but in doing so, they’re missing something else: The guy hit .315/.329/.552 with 10 homers in 143 at-bats during his time with the Rockies. Andruw Jones isn’t giving the Los Angeles Dodgers anywhere near that kind of production this year.
And Barry Zito? Don’t get me started. He’s still looking for the first extra-base hit of his career. That reminds me: I wonder who Zito will be pitching for when the Giants finally stop paying him…
