Short Hops: Lowell, Hardy and Sabathia

Is it me or does today’s title sound like a law firm?

According to Adam Kilgore of the Boston Globe, third baseman Mike Lowell is questionable to start game two tonight against the Angels. He has a torn labrum in his right hip and it’s been giving him major problems.

“We may have to make some changes as we go in the series,” Francona said. “I spent a lot of time talking to Mike Lowell this morning. It’s not just like a little nagging hamstring he’s dealing with. I really don’t know what we’re going to do tomorrow. It’s actually a very difficult decision for me. You’ve got a guy who’s the ultimate gamer. He’ll go out there every day. We’re going back in a couple days to Fenway, facing a lefty. It’s very important having his bat in the lineup. So again, there’s some decisions we still need to make. I haven’t really actually come to a conclusion yet.”

FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal touches on a variety of subjects in his latest column, including a bit on JJ Hardy who knows his future with the Brewers might be limited and could find himself traded to make room for shortstop prospect Alcides Escobar.

“(The Brewers) had brought over a ton of new kids from the Dominican and Venezuela, all 16 and 17 years old,” Hardy says. “I picked out Escobar out of all the guys. I didn’t even know he was a shortstop. But he was having fun, smiling, laughing. I gave him bats and gloves. The next thing I knew, he was the shortstop who was going to take my job.”

…Even though the Tampa Bay Rays went on to win Game 1 against the White Sox yesterday - they did it without slugging first baseman Carlos Pena. He was removed after the second inning of yesterdays game with blurry vision. Pena had scratched his eye at home the night before. He was given some eye drops by team trainers and is expected to be in the line up today for game two against the ChiSox.

…The Seattle Mariners have trimmed down their list of General Manager hopeful’s to 10-12 according to a report in the Tacoma News Tribune, and this is even before conducting one single interview.

“The number of candidates has been reduced, but we’re only going to interview the candidates we’d perceived to be the best,” Armstrong said. “We’re not going to expand it. We’re moving ahead on schedule, and the interview process will begin next week.”

Armstrong also went on to add that not everyone mentioned in the press were actual candidates. Rumor has it that they want to have a GM by the end of the World Series.

According to Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times Angels owner Artie Moreno said he wanted to keep his payroll for next year the same as this year (about $124MM). Which wouldn’t help keep the current roster together. Though he stated before game one against the Red Sox that he would expand his budget for the right players. Also how deep into October the Angels play could be a factor as well.

According to Bob Klapisch of the North Jersey Record the Mets and Yankees are going to get into a bidding war for the services of CC Sabathia. He figures that both Brian Cashman and Omar Minaya will open the purse strings to try and sign Sabathia.

…Joe Starkey of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review thinks that the Pirates need to non-tender first baseman Adam LaRoche and basically kick the high priced veterans to the curb - namely LaRoche, shortstop Jack Wilson and second baseman Freddie Sanchez. The way Starkey makes it sound, they should just pour gas on the whole organization and let it burn to the ground and completely start over..

…Colorado Rockies First Baseman Todd Helton underwent surgery on his lower back and is expected to be ready for spring training.
