Short Hops: Yanks scrap plans, Mariners and more

According to the USA Today, Umpire Mike Rielly was made crew chief for the NLCS and Tim McClelland was named crew chief for the ALCS….The New York Yankees have decided to scrap plans to have a closing ceremony for Yankee stadium in November. Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen were rumored to be sought out for the event.

“The Yankees were considering having a charitable event at Yankee Stadium for BAT (Baseball Assistance Team), however, the Yankees realized that the final event at Yankee Stadium should be a baseball game, which in fact took place on Sept. 21,” spokesman Howard Rubenstein said Wednesday. “Accordingly, rather than having a fundraiser, the Yankees will be donating $500,000 to BAT.”

…Seattle Mariners president Chuck Armstrong opened up to Jim Street of MLB.com talking about the clubs future and the hiring of a new General Manager. The part of the interview that makes my spine tingle is when Armstrong says that the new General Manager will have less power than former GM Bill Bavasi and a smaller payroll. I’m not sure how many potential GM’s you’re going to attract saying that.

…The San Diego Padres have cleared more room on thier 40 man roster, outrighting infielder Craig Stansberry, pitchers Kevin Cameron and Tim Stauffer to the Triple A Portland Beavers. The Padres 40 man roster now sits at 32.

…In the ongoing saga of New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos continues. He will remain jailed for three months while awaiting trial on hit and run charges in his native Nagua, in the Dominican Republic.

 ”I am going to come out of this fine because my conscience is clear, and I’m not worried this will affect my career because I haven’t done anything,” he said in the jailhouse interview.

…The Minnesota Twins announced yesterday that they have exercised catcher Mike Redmond’s club option for 2009. He will continue to back up catcher Joe Mauer.
