Baseball Prospectus has the results of the AL voting in the Internet Baseball Awards here.
Here are the winners:
2008 IBA AL MVP: Dustin Pedroia
2008 IBA AL Cy Young: Cliff Lee
2008 IBA AL Rookie of the Year: Evan Longoria
2008 IBA AL Manager of the Year
All in all, the voting results seem to rank the players much more accurately than the actual MVP and Cy Young voting are likely to do. That said, the actual winners might actually match up exactly for all 4 awards, with Pedroia seeming to be the least likely. Without checking, it seems unlikely that’s ever happened before in either league.
A quick take upon reading the voting results:
- Danks is far too low, otherwise CY voting looks pretty reasonable. Ballpark really obscured a great season.
- Quentin is a bit high, considering ballpark and MIA in September due to self-inflicted injury. Bradley could arguably be somewhat higher, though it’s hard to rank DH’s, as their “replacement level” really includes all the hitters in the league, since any hitter can play DH. Otherwise, MVP voting looks very reasonable.
- If Aviles’ defensive stats are accurate (his reputation certainly doesn’t agree with them, as he was being pulled for defensive purposes), he is really underrated in ROY. Ditto for Span (though his stats and reputation are both solid). I think Galarraga should be higher - he had a good year, probably better than Ellsbury, and his “quantity” should put him ahead of Ziegler and Joba. Texas played like a neutral park, so Davis should be rated higher.
- No comment on the MOY awards.
Comments welcome. Other BDD writers will be contributing in Comments section, as well.

…The Texas Rangers have announced that former Milwaukee Brewers pitching coach Mike Maddux has signed on for the the same duties with the Rangers. Also, Andy Hawkins has been promoted to bullpen coach as well. [Yahoo]
GM John Daniels on Maddux:
“Improving our pitching staff is our top priority for next season,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “Mike has a proven track record at the major league level. He has both coached a staff that has been in postseason contention each of the last two years, and also helped develop young pitchers.”
…Both Ted Simmons and Jim Lefebvre have been added to the San Deigo Padres coaching staff. Simmons will be manager Bud Black’s bench coach, the same role he had in Milwaukee before Ned Yost was fired. Lefebvre will replace Wally Joyner as the teams hitting coach. [CBS]
…The Florida Marlins have claimed LHP Dan Meyer off of waivers from the Oakland A’s. He spent most of the season in Triple A going 10-5 with a 4.22 ERA (pretty decent for the Pacific Coast League). Meyer is a former first round draft pick, when he was drafted in the first round by the Atlanta Braves in 2002. [Yahoo]
…According to his agent Scott Boras, Greg Maddux is close to retiring. Boras attended a charity event last week with his client and Maddux told him he was more likely going to spend more time with his family than pitching. [Yahoo]
“He hasn’t made a final decision,” Boras said on the first day of baseball’s general managers’ meetings. “I’d say as it looks now it’s doubtful that he’ll play.”
…According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune, it seems that there’s been some interest in Padres shortstop Khalil Greene. The teams said to be kicking the tires include the Orioles, Red and Tigers - who all could use a shortstop. Though I’m not sure Greene is the answer. He seemed to fall off a cliff this year, not to mention he missed the last part of the season due to a self inflicted broken wrist. [SD Union-Tribune]
…The San Fransisco Giants have signed first baseman Josh Phelps to a minor league deal with a spring training invite. Good low risk, high reward move for the Giants. [Giants]
…The Tampa Bay Rays have declined to exercise options on Designated Hitter Cliff Floyd and LHP Trevor Miller. No surprise with Floyd as he’s injured and hinted at retiring anyways. Miller was the odd man out with JP Howell being the lefty out of the pen. [Heater]
…The Boston Red Sox and General Manager Theo Epstein has agreed to a new contract. When asked about it, he said he couldn’t exactly remember when he signed it - but for sure wouldn’t reveal the terms. [CBS]
