In these days of sports news, where everything “hot” seems to be about either the failings of various teams and players, or about the “greed” of all involved (teams, agents, players) as they try to take maximal advantage of free agency, I found this blurb, as reported by Jamey Newberg of The Newberg Report (newbergreport.com), to be heartening:

C.J. Wilson is hosting a Guitar Hero Battle of the Bands at 7 p.m. tonight at the Diamond Club at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington .  Tickets are $10 at the door, and for an extra $20 donation, you can enter a raffle for a chance to win a 30-minute ride with Wilson in a $400,000 605HP Porsche Carrera GT.  All proceeds benefit Wilson ’s Children’s Charities and the Families of Soldiers from Fort Hood Serving in Iraq and Afghanistan .  Parking is free in Lot K, adjacent to the east side of the Ballpark.  As for the contest, entrants will compete for the champion title of Xbox 360’s Guitar Hero World Tour, performing in front of a panel of judges.

What a great, fun way for him to use his position as a sports figure to help others!  Hopefully, Joel Zumaya’s out of the country.
